Description |
A handspun towel comprised of bleached plain weave linen. At each of the top corners there is a 1.00" long bleached linen twill loop. Near the top is the cross-stitched name "ANNA BEILER" (the first "N" is backwards), separated by a large floral bouquet. The year "1845" is located below, and the inscription is flanked by two floral bouquets, embroidered in red and blue cotton cross-stitched embroidery. The entire design is encircled with a decorative wreath. Located underneath the name are the cross-stitched initials "M.S." and the year "1869" in red cotton. Below the initials are two sets of decorative embroidery, probably from the end of the nineteenth century, comprised of two stylized wreaths, with a centered letter, the left wreath features the letter "A" and the right wreath features the letter "S" all embroidered in red cotton. Near the bottom of the towel are two floral motifs with an 1.250" wide attached panel with a red cotton zigzag border and 1/4" long self-fringe. At the bottom of the towel there is another floral garland embroidered in red cotton with a blue cotton herringbone border. Attached to the bottom of the towel is a 4.00" long hand knotted bleached linen self-fringe. The top and right edge have a 1/4" wide foldover hem while the left edge has been left unfinished. |
