Description |
Lily crib quilt comprised of a 5 x 5 block formation. Each block averages 5.25" x 5.00" and consists of either a plain white cotton block with diagonal quilt stitching, or a pieced tulip made of faded red cotton with a black polka dot print and black cotton (the black cotton has probably faded from a dark green as that color is seen near the edges) with a white and orange coral print, appliquéd onto the white ground fabric. After the patchwork diamonds and triangles and appliquéd stems and leaves deteriorated, they were refurbished by appliqué over the damaged areas. The surrounding border is 2.25" wide and comprised of a sawtooth pattern made of plain white cotton and the same red printed cotton. The outer border is 5.750" wide and made of plain white cotton with feather quilt stitching and a 3/8" wide applied binding made of the same black printed cotton. The entire quilt is handstitched with white thread and a SPI of 4-10. The back is comprised of plain white cotton with a possible patch job or separate panel used, made of brighter white cotton. |
Provenance |
Attributed to Mahella A. (Rhoads) Wolfgang (1871-1947), wife of Clayton W. Wolfgang (1877-1951). They resided in Earl Township, Berks County. The quilt was probably made for her daughter, Lizzie R. (Wolfgang) Bauer (1898-1991). |
