Description |
A woman's two piece dress with detachable bustle, all made out of the same grey striped changeable silk. a) The handstitched bodice has a high rounded neckline and is softly pleated at the front to create a slight billowy shape. There is a center front button closure comprised of six cornflower blue molded and covered buttons. The back is box pleated with a shorter hemline. The 14.00" long sleeves are sloped, but are set into the arm syce with self-piping at the shoulders. The sleeves are cut in the bishop shape, a style popular during the mid 19th century, and there is an applied trim of blue taffeta on the back of the sleeves. There is an application of lace at the collar and attached to the inside of the cuffs. There are also two hook and eye closures at the waist. The bodice is lined in glazed brown cotton while the sleeves and hem are lined in a glazed cream cotton lining. The bodice is machine constructed with hand finishing details. b) The skirt is wide and full with gores and box pleating. The waistband is made out of brown glazed cotton and there is no closure at the waist (probably once had hook and eyes). There is a pocket on the proper right side, also lined in the glazed brown cotton. There is an application of the same blue taffeta near the bottom of the skirt, encircling the entire skirt. The hem is trimmed in a sky blue wool tape. The entire skirt is lined in the glazed brown cotton and is machine constructed with hand finishing details. c) The machine made bustle is formed out of a self-fabric waistband and a self-fabric bow attached at the back. There is no closure on the waistband but again, there was probably once a hook and eye closure. The edges of the bow are trimmed in the same blue taffeta used throughout. The bow would have been worn over the skirt and sat at the back. |
