Description |
Crewel embroidered quilt comprised of plain white cotton muslin ground with wool embroidery. The central theme is an eagle clasping snake sitting on an anchor with four American flags (with 13 stripes and 38 stars). The quilt is further decorated with cotton appliqués, reverse appliqués, and wool embroidery of various fruits: grapes, strawberries, cherries and various animals (in chain stitch; roosters, horses, cats and variants of birds. The entire center has diamond cross-hatching. The surrounding border is 8.25" wide and is made of the same plain white cotton with feather quilt stitching and diamond cross-hatching and has a 1/4" wide foldover binding from back to front. The entire quilt is handstitched with pink (faded red) thread and a SPI of 4-8 The back is comprised of plain white cotton. |

Made by Elphrena Hennings Gerhard Wagner (1841-1922) of Skippack Township, when she had scarlet/typhoid fever. She survived and later went on to become a member of the Lutheran Church. This quilt was documented in the Goschenhoppen Quilt Survey. |
